Working Out With A Friend Makes a Difference
|
Find a fitness buddy and you'll find that working out is not only easier, it's a lot more fun. Studies have shown that people who work out in pairs are more likely to stick to their fitness routine and have better weight-loss results than those who go it alone.
“Find a buddy with a similar profile in terms of goals, schedule and location,” says Keith Irace, regional group manager for Equinox Fitness Group.
Here are four fitness buddy advantages:
Accountability: "Any type of appointment makes a difference in your commitment level," says Irace. If someone expects you at the gym, it’s not as easy to stay in bed. And don’t underestimate the power of true confessions. Knowing you’ll have to come clean to your buddy about indulgent bouts of mindless eating may make you think twice before hitting the fridge.
Support: Getting the right support is key to achieving any goal. At the end of the day you can check in with your buddy to report what you did right as well as what you did wrong. A good buddy will empathize and also help keep you motivated.
Healthy Competition: A little competition may fire you up and keep things exciting. "Try creating a weight-loss challenge and award a prize to the buddy who achieves their personal goal first," suggests Irace. If your buddy walks faster or starts seeing results sooner, you might be inspired to work harder.
